Keeping it happy
Full sun, free-draining soil or a gritty compost in a pot. Water while it settles in, then only when the pot or soil is properly dry.
It is not as tough as English lavender. In colder parts of the country, keep it in a pot so you can bring it into an unheated greenhouse, porch or conservatory until spring. Trim off faded flower heads to keep it neat.

Lavender thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, reflecting its Mediterranean origins. It struggles in clay or waterlogged ground, so if your garden holds a lot of moisture, another plant may suit you better.

Lavender is wonderfully low-maintenance once established. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot, water regularly for the first few weeks after planting, then ease off as it settles in. A light prune after flowering keeps it compact and full. That's all it needs to thrive.
